For her craft products business: https://www.liftmeupcrafts.com (which BTW has a 20% off summer sale at the moment 😉). So this is a great opportunity for Adrian to seek advice from Jeremiah, who is much more knowledgeable about this stuff. We start with the most important question… “what do you want to print?” and go from there. This is the printer under consideration. Watch this on video | Join us on Discord for more TFOP chat! Chris and Jeremiah dive into DALL-E, a new neural net that creates art based on text prompts. The implications are vast. 214 The Future of Landscape Photography
Watch this on video | Join us on Discord for more TFOP chat! A couple of interesting things happened this week. We had a great conversation in our Discord about the International Landscape Photographer of the Year 2021 - plenty of differing views. A lot of the discussion focused on the extreme post processing in winning images. Some were strongly against it, others less concerned. Also, Skylum have now released the production version of Luminar Neo. This brings a suite of new tools to edit your photos and add and remove features. What does this mean for the future of landscape photography? Picks of the week: Anil Mistry: Hometown. Urban landscapes plus emotional journey with people and b&w. 205 Innovation Beyond Flying Phones
Watch this on video | Join us on Discord for more TFOP chat! Members of our Discord - good friends that they are - challenged our recent show 203 on innovation. It seems we came across as a little biased towards innovation of a technical and computational nature, largely driven by phone and drone manufacturers. Naturally we hotly contest this view - whilst also recognising that we operate in a service economy and that no-one will listen to our service if we annoy you all ;-) So this week we present and discuss innovation from broader sources, including those who work very hard to bring us the dedicated cameras we love to lust over. Watch this on video | Join us on Discord for more TFOP chat! Chris presents three new devleopments from computational photography and videography. He created timeless work in landscape and his prints are nothing short of outstanding. Will it change the face of video production or maybe even still photography? Some clickables... BBC summary of Quibi including interviews with the two founders. Article describing the service. Happy Holidays to all our listeners, friends and family! Holidays are a time of photographic opportunity and occasionally obligation. To help you maximise/survive the TFOP team offer these creative ideas. Chris: Move that camera, especially around all those Christmas lights. Ade: Theme a shot - Christmas mugshots with presents - one lens, one light, one plain wall. Or maybe rent a lens so you can have fun and experiment and learn whilst also doing the holiday chores. Or give away photos as you shoot - make people smile! (Selphy dye sub, instant film, zink...). Eimear: I am far more likely to be found sweating in the kitchen on Christmas day. Seriously... I do love looking back at old albums from when I was a kid, Christmas featured heavily in those, simpler times. Jeremiah: Extreme macro holiday-themed image! Sony's 3-layer sensor incorporates not just the light-sensitive pixels, but also some DRAM and logic, sandwiched on top of each other. This enables Sony to achieve high frame rates without the dreaded rolling shutter effect. | Scientists at the university of Utah have developed a lens that is 1000x thinner than regular optics. We speculate about how this could change photography in the future. And it's not all positive. | Out of Germany comes the self-resetting pixel which promises a way to end overexposure once and for all. Chris remembers MIT's Modulo Camera, which proposed the same method. | The traditional method of film makers to animate static 2D images is getting challenged by researchers at the Portland State University. 086 Law of Unintended Consequences
Is the origin of an image as important as the subject of the image? As innovative camera technologies allow the image makers to go beyond "the decisive moment" enabling the capture of polygons, heat signatures, Infra Red, topographical information and more than the eye can see. As high performing VR cameras enable massive environmental capture - into which re-framing images moves us away from the here and now to a future where we can select and re-frame an image. As software like UnrealEngine, Unity and others enable creation of photorealistic environments and more. The artist has arrived at a moment in time in which a photograph can created out of the imagination. We instinctively experience those images as real. But darker forces loom as DEEP FAKES distributed by a robust social media network take cultural and political steps to a dangerous place.

Who will make your next camera? Despite new launches from both Canon and Nikon recently, Fuji are winning lots of internet reviewer awards for best camera of 2018. DJI even own Hasselblad now. If Chinese manufacturers who already build many phone cameras now start to make waves in the traditional camera markets, how will the established Japanese, German and other nationality companies compete?

062 Blend don’t blast
Over the holidays Ade rented a type of LED light he had not used before - a Westcott Icelight 2 from hireacamera.com. “It made me think about the way I shoot with light in a different way. It didn’t give me absolute control over light - it’s not powerful enough. But it did give me plenty to light a subject above the ambient light - indoors anyway - and made me think more about what filmmakers call “practicals”. It’s a blending of light rather than blasting.” So, will the future of photographic lighting change the art? Or is this just another aesthetic trend?

Conclusions? This integration or workflow element of our photography is important but which services do Ade and Chris trust with their images and their money? How about a TFOP meetup in the UK in 2018? Potential for knowledge sharing, playing with other people's toys, recording a live show... If that sounds like fun to you, please let us know by registering your interest. Support the show: we have set up a donation box where you can contribute to our ongoing research and production effort. We're grateful for your support.

013 KodakCoin
Did the Kodak Coin announcement confuse you? Kodak (actually one of their licensing partners) wants to put the entire photography business on a blockchain. On this episode we try to make sense of this announcement. Also: Chris' new streaming setup that looks like portrait mode (YouTube) and let us know if you'd be interested in a TFOP meetup in the UK in 2018.

012 Personal Drones
At the family holiday festivities, Ade saw kids as young as 8 get drones as presents. "Holy Flying Menace, Batman" he thought to himself. He quickly ran to safety and started researching the mainstream acceptance of consumer-grade drones. Even common newspapers had buying guides. Also this week, hilarity ensues when Chris flies his own drone indoors and crashes it :-) Would you be interested in a TFOP meetup in the UK in 2018? 011 Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation Networks
Chris and Ade explore some new research that just came out of Nvidia, a manufacturer of graphics and machine learning hardware. In the future it will be possible to translate a winter image into a summer image or a corgi into a german shepherd and they are showing that in a set of impressive demos. TFOP 002 Depth. 010 Philosophy of Computational Photography
This week Ade and Chris try to leave the science behind and talk philosophy. They almost manage it, but not quite. There is an amusing interlude while we try to imagine what art critics think and then the reality of what the real critics - friends and family - might say. Also, would you be interested in a TFOP meetup, workshop and live recording? Register your interest here and we will start developing the ideas!

009 L16
Happy New Year! The L16 is an interesting beast. 16 cameras and some computational photography make this a brick-shaped camera that is hard to ignore. Chris and Ade bring you some first-hand experience, they discuss what this means for photography and also talk about some of its shortcomings as portrayed by an article on Petapixel. Our robot finally has a name: eevee. Thanks Dave Schuder for coming up with the idea! The t-shirt winners are Dave Schuder, Paul Friday for the cleverness award and Steve Connery and Deborah Nelson with a honorable mention each. Thanks all for your wonderful ideas!

008 Glitch Art
Glitch art is the practice of using digital or analog errors for aesthetic purposes by either corrupting digital data or physically manipulating electronic devices. It has a long history in movies, music and the arts. It also has some humorous unintentional outlets. A key assumption is that it's ok to destroy pixels - something photographers often try to preserve. And it's GREAT FUN!!! Try it yourself with the DECIM8 app discussed in the show and take a look at one of Chris' projects and a shot by Ade too.

007 An Observation by Adam Savage
Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame) makes an interesting observation: lately the cameras that people bring to his live show's meet-and-greets have changed: where people used to bring phones, many of them now bring bigger dedicated cameras and analog media as well. Has the pendulum swung back? Has digital been a fad all along? Listen in while Chris and Ade look at the implications of this development.

006 Lots of Pixels
For years, we have observed and participated in the megapixel race. Pretty much all photographers have an opinion on this. So do Chris and Ade :-) So how do all these pixels impact our images? Are they necessary? Can we use them to be creative? What might the results of that look like? All these questions and more inform the boys' weekly musing on The Future of Photography. 005 Flat Lenses
Today's lenses are made of solid glass. This makes bigger lenses heavy and bulky. While fresnel lenses have managed to make lenses flatter by splitting them up in concentric circles of lens segments, they have always had some level of quality loss which makes them not ideal to use in photographic applications. Microsoft has now patented a flat lens that uses tiny nano structures on a flat surface to bend light similar to what a traditional lens does. For the future of photography this could mean smaller lenses and thinner smartphones without a camera bump. Don't forget, our robot still has no name and you could choose it and win a t-shirt! Make as many suggestions as you like here by 24th December.

004b Boy or Girl? Help Us Name Our Robot And WIN!
OH NO. Our robot has no name. What an inexcusable oversight of us. Help us give it (him? her?) a name for a chance to win a t-shirt with ... you guessed it ... our robot on it. Submit your suggestions here, the deadline is December 24 2017. Good luck! (and of course, we'd also be more than happy if it turns out gender-neutral :))

004 Animating Images
In the last few years we have seen many approaches to animating photos. Not video as such, more visual effects for impact and fun. Right now it is getting easier all the time. Chris and Ade discuss how we got here, what tools we can use today and the impact they have on our images. From cinemagraphs, through professional tools and now into consumer space, we have lots to play with. Animoto and Quik will help you with presenting photos to friends and family. And Apple Live Photos, along with Samsung, Google and others will help you get started in the glorious, occasionally cheesy, art of animation.

003 Computational Zoom
What if one photo could contain multiple focal lengths and treat the magnification of background and foreground in a fundamentally different way? Researchers at the UCSB (the University of California, Santa Barbara) have moved one step closer to this. Their research paper shows their algorithm allowing to take a stack of images that was taken from different perspectives and at different focal lengths and combining them into a single photo with variable focal lengths.

So what exactly is computational photography? Chris and Ade discuss a range of examples including panoramas, HDR and lens correction. Do they nail the jelly to the wall? Not completely but it’s fun trying and the more they try the bigger the topic gets. More power is definitely good though! Wikipedia definition Bookmark the website here
